Hands forward or center at address?

HANDS are Key

There are two basic ways of setting up to swing the golf club.

Forward press or placing the hands in front of the club head at address is unnatural. The moment you move the hands forward, tension is created in the lead arm, which forces the arms to be in an unnatural position. As a result of this setup, the lead arm will start the takeaway resulting in a twist of the hips to create power, which is not optimal. Hips are the largest group of muscles in the human body and are huge resources for power when used properly. When making a big hip turn at the start of the swing, they will have a tough time turning completely on the finish, as a result, the hips stop prematurely causing the upper body to complete the swing putting unnatural stress on the lower back. When starting the downswing from this position, the player nine times out of ten will hit a slice, push or pull hook. In other words, if you are trying to hit a slice, you may succeed.

Placing the hands in the center at address takes tension out of the arms and hands, this is natural.

The takeaway should be initiated by a slight shift into the back foot, which will build up as much kinetic energy as possible, think like a slingshot or a snake coiled and ready to strike. As a result, the club will work up instead of around, keeping the club in balance. For the downswing, we want an unrestricted path down to the ball and through to the target.

What we want; When the hips shift to the backfoot on the takeaway, they have a tendency to pivot on the forward swing.

What we don’t want; When the hips turn on the takeaway, they have a tendency to slide on the forward swing.

Golf clubs are weighted and designed to be SWUNG, they don't need to be guided back to the ball. With proper posture and measurement to the ball at address, with relaxed arms and hands, the objective is to swing the club head in the direction of your intended target. Let the club do it's job!

I have created a simple tool which you attach to the grip which helps to keep the hands quiet in a putt. This tool forces the player to use their coordinated side to deliver the club, by making a Natural Swing through the ball to the target, it is called the "Swing King".
